The river is one of the main reasons people come to our neighborhood. We need to celebrate it, keep it clean, and make it a gathering place.

Watch my video to see what I think about this great jewel on the west side.

Getting to the council takes the hard work of a lot of people who have already organized. These groups have already done a lot for our community, and I thank them for their public support.Endorsements

While streetcars may be important long-term as part of a comprehensive plan, access to frequent and local bus service linking our neighborhoods is the most immediate need.

While crime in our neighborhoods has its roots in a variety of social issues, we need a strong and well-resourced police force with sufficient patrol officers to deter and prevent crime as well as collaborate with us on ways to ensure that our families and kids are safe.

Salt Lake West is bigger and better than ever. The west side is booming and shows no sign of slowing down. With all this growth, we need a leader than can help shape Salt Lake West into SALT LAKE BEST. For the big vision, click the pic!

Public Safety:

The safety of our west side neighborhoods is the most important issue we should address. As a community council in Poplar Grove, we have advocated with the city for improved crosswalks and reintroduced the neighborhood Night out against Crime. While crime in our neighborhoods has its roots in a variety of social issues, we need a strong and well-resourced police force with sufficient patrol officers to deter and prevent crime as well as collaborate with us on ways to ensure that our families and kids are safe in parks, on the river trail and at school. Our streets should be well lit, and safe for all commuters, our trails and parks should be clean and maintained for families to enjoy. My work and views have prompted the Salt Lake Police Association to endorse me and I stand committed to ensure that our neighborhoods are as safe as any in the city.

Transportation:

The Westside deserves better public transit options than currently available. While streetcars may be important long-term as part of a comprehensive plan, access to frequent and local bus service linking our neighborhoods is the most immediate need.

We should ensure that the Jordan River Trail is maintained and completed between North Temple and 200 South. Safe bicycle lanes are also a part of a thoughtful plan to allow more options for commuting, better air quality and enhanced quality of life for all our residents.

Homeless Shelter:

I’ve worked for 6 years in homeless and behavioral health services In Salt Lake City. I am proud of the numerous professionals, volunteers and clients with whom I have associated who are dedicated to serving one another and the most vulnerable in our community. Despite valiant efforts from all of these individuals, the current shelter configuration has produced numerous problems in the Rio Grande Neighborhood that must be addressed.

Moving the shelter to the Westside is not an answer to the problem.

Fundamentally, this is a problem due to scarcity of resources including housing, substance abuse, mental health and physical health care services. I will work to collaborate with the entire county and ensure affordable housing including the housing first model, fund ongoing support services and outreach efforts along with any discussion of emergency shelter location and configuration.

Affordable Housing:

We know that we have a lack of affordable housing and it will continue to undermine our city’s overall health if not addressed. I support any effort to bring housing balance to our Westside neighborhoods and ensure that we can all afford to contribute to our city. We must thoughtfully develop our business nodes and bring some mixed use housing while protecting our single-family homes and neighborhoods. The Westside should not be the only place in the city for affordable housing and our children deserve to have a variety of clean, safe housing options.

Neighborhood Beautification:

The Westside has some of the great assets in the entire city. We have great parks, affordable, stable neighborhoods and the Jordan River and trail. We are in a great position to offer families all of the benefits of downtown with the tranquility of quiet neighborhoods. I am committed to promoting the improvement of these resources including the 400 south and 600 North freeway exits, maintaining our westside parks and trails, and encouraging upgrading the business districts along North Temple, 900 West and Redwood Road.
